ticker tape

Ticker Tape

Here finally is my epic scarfy thingy, Ticker Tape. Finished it in October but it took forever to corral the Huz into being my photographer and getting it up online.

It spells out the first four lines of Robert Frost’s Mending Wall.

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

Full text here.

Ticker Tape

It's long.

Ticker Tape

I can do fun things with it,

Ticker Tape

like wrap it around myself like some crazy crossing guard. "Stop! Poetry at crosswalk!"

Ticker Tape

I'm working on writing up the pattern with a fully charted alphabet and punctuation marks for vertical knitting. It's all on graph paper, but how to transfer all those charts to the computer?

Ticker Tape

If I wrap it around my neck a million times all the words make a nice cozy cowl.

I love that scarf, not to mention the idea of wearing a knitted poem! And the Bohos hat is indeed a dream.

I want to be there the next time one of your designs percolates in your head. Knitting as art. And typography.

i use MacStitch to chart x-stitch patterns and it has a convertor for knitting.

I think you know that I am crazy about this piece of crazy wonderful knitting since I saw it at Rhinebeck. I also love the photo of it spooling out in the air around you. Love love love.

I would totally buy a pattern for this ticker tape scarf, even though my knitting skills don't yet extend to intarsia (which I assume is necessary for the letters). This is SO VERY COOL-- kudos to you!

Thanks BupBabe. This is just regular old stranded knitting and not a bad place to start if you haven't done any colorwork before. It would require a little bit of concentration because the letters change every row, but other than that it is fairly easy. I'm working on writing up the pattern right now. :)

I'm ready to buy your pattern on Ravelry! Please please please continue until completion of the Ticker Tape pattern. I hope you are just charting the alphabet, and not the entire poem! I love love love your knitted calligraphy - especially the lettering of the words across the bottom of the Vikingships ('dragon boat') pattern.

Thank you!! Yes, I'm still working on the pattern for this chart and am charting the alphabet so that the knitter will be able to spell out whatever they please.

I'm very curious about what you mean by the viking ships pattern, perhaps you are confusing me with someone else. I would love to see the pattern regardless.

I found jennifer Leith's free alphabets on Ravelry - ACE - but I want yours too; and in any case I need your instructions how to make the back all-white, looks double-knit rather than tubular? Could one kniw words on the back also, for a mobius strip - for that I'd choose George Harrison's We were talking about the space between us all - - - and life goes on within you and without you ... You are such an inspiration. THANKYOU. (By the way I came to know you via your book jacket, love your initials!
